They found it east of the CPR station in a loop of the Red River called Point Douglas. Point Douglas before the hookers (1900). The adjoining McFarlane Street was an extension of the red-light area. The prostitutes were encouraged to buy the flimsy, two-storey wooden houses in the area and move in. Soon the police chief and the city fathers made it a true red-light district of permitted sex (though not bootlegging).
As respectable families began building in west central Winnipeg, so began a howl of outrage against the working girls.
